How to Buy Shoes That Fit You

Happy feet start with shoes that are comfortable and fit well. When purchasing shoes, do your shopping in the afternoon when your feet are usually their largest. Have your feet measured every time to make sure your size has not changed, as can happen over time. If you are like most people, one foot will be slightly larger than the other; choose the size that accommodates the larger foot. Ensure that the ball of your foot fits the widest part of the shoe comfortably. Check the length of the shoe to make sure there is ample room for your toes, and choose shoes that are shaped similarly to your feet. Remember that shoe sizes can fluctuate based on brand and other factors, so always try them on. While standing, check to make sure the width of your finger fits comfortably between the top of your toes and the tip of the shoe. Walk around the store to make sure they feel good and do not slip or rub you uncomfortably. If the shoes do not feel great in the store, don’t rely on them stretching out with wear. A podiatrist can make other specific recommendations based on your foot structure and needs, and also provide custom orthotics for additional support, or to correct any gait issues you may have.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from New Jersey Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

As the main stabilizing structure supporting the arch, the posterior tibial tendon is an important and hard-working tendon. Though with repetition or overuse, this tendon can become injured. This injury can contribute to pain and stress on the arch which can change the gait and even cause the arch to collapse over time. Prescription orthotics that are custom fit to the individual’s feet may be one form of treatment a podiatrist might use to help support and stabilize the arch and correct gait abnormalities. If you have pain on the inside of your foot or ankle, an appointment with a podiatrist is suggested for an accurate diagnosis and evaluation of your condition.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from New Jersey Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

The Many Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain can have a variety of causes, but the most common cause of it is plantar fasciitis. This occurs when the long band of tissue on the sole of the foot becomes inflamed. Women late in their pregnancy and people who waitress or work on their feet all day may be more at risk for developing this type of heel pain. Other causes of heel pain can include: a small crack in the heel bone, compressed nerves, worn down heel pads, nerve damage, thickened tissue surrounding a nerve, inflammation of the tendon that connects the heel bone with the calf muscles, plantar warts, and abnormalities in the bone which can causes inflammation of the bursa sac. There may also be injury to the tunnel between the heel and talus bones known as Sinus Tarsi Syndrome.  If you are struggling with any type of pain in your heel it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of New Jersey Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Prepping Your Feet for a Healthy Hike

Preparing your feet for a hike can help you to prevent an injury and make your excursion more relaxing and enjoyable. Start with a pair of comfortable hiking boots or shoes that provide plenty of room in the toe box and ensure that the feet don’t slip out of the shoes at the heel or arch area. It is also important to gradually break the boots in before going on a long hike. Choose moisture-wicking socks, or even toe-socks that separate the toes—preventing them from rubbing together and possibly even helping to distribute your weight more evenly. Bring an extra pair of socks to switch out if your feet get too sweaty or wet during the hike. Before you hit the trail, do some gentle stretching in your bare feet such as rolling your arches on a tennis ball, stretching out your toes, circling your ankles slowly, and stretching your calves. If you have spots on your feet that are prone to blistering, apply some tape, moleskin, or a bandage to the area, and pack extra supplies to apply to any hotspots you start feeling on the trail. For advice on choosing shoes or getting custom orthotics that are best for your specific feet on or off the trail, please consult with a podiatrist today.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from New Jersey Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Healthy Foot Tips for Hiking

Whether you are heading out for a quick day hike or plan on camping and hiking for a few days, there are measures that can be implemented to ensure that your feet are up to the task. One of the most common conditions that can wreak havoc on the feet during a hike is developing an ingrown toenail. Having long toenails can cause discomfort, but cutting the nails too short and having them grow into the skin can be excruciating. The best advice to help prevent ingrown toenails is to cut the toenails straight across and not too short before you even leave for a hike. The next step is to make sure that your shoes or hiking boots fit properly by ensuring the back of the heel sits tight to the back of the shoe, but the toes can still wiggle. Once hiking, any discomfort to the feet should be addressed right away. This can be accomplished by changing socks and bandaging any areas that may be forming blisters. After the hike it is important not to pop any blisters on the feet in order to reduce the risk of infection. If you have questions about keeping your feet healthy during your next hike or camping trip, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from New Jersey Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.
